Zen Story

"The monastic community offers a prayer service three times a day: at dawn, in the lat morning, and in the evening. One day, Dazhong approached Master Huangbo, who was leading the ceremony, and asked, 'The Buddha stated, 'Do not crave nor seek the Buddha; do not crave nor seek the Dharma of truth; do not crave nor seek the monastic sangha.' So why do monks offer prayer services every day to the image of the Buddha?'

Master Huangbo answered, 'One prays to the Buddha neither craving nor seeking the Buddha; one prays to the Dharma without craving nor seeking the Dharma of truth; one prays to the masters neither craving nor seeking the monastic sangha.'
